I wanna start this by saying that I won't spoil anything here. The ending is something that I didn't see coming and was so happy and excited with it so I don't wanna spoil that for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.
So I had mixed feelings about this movie when I first saw the trailer. Cause I like most of M. Night's movies regardless of how they've done critically. His last movie, The Visit, really surprised me with how good it was. The blend of comedy and horror and fleshed out characters was impressive and unexpected in a movie like that. Split is a total different kind of thriller and it's amazing! James McAvoy played all the personalities so well and I'm so glad that he did cause I thought it could be super corny to see him play a child and a woman. He put on such a great performance that I hope next years Golden Globes and Oscars don't forget about this movie because I can't imagine how hard some of those scenes were to shoot with changing personalities on the fly.
I think my favorite aspect of this movie is the therapist that McAvoy is seeing. We see her throughout the movie as he visits her but we also see her exploring just what is wrong with him and trying to make people aware of this condition. It really helps give the movie a nice pace to it while also reminding us that he has issues without them being shoved down our throats. And I'm one of those people who doesn't know much about multiple personalities so it was interesting to hear.
The music really sets the tone for this movie as well. It's dark and moody for the most part and gives great tension. And I know that it doesn't matter to some but I loved the titles at the start. Very simple but effective! There are some really interesting shots too, especially in the last 20 minutes or so. I also wanted to mention the girls that get abducted and how well they did. Haley Lu Richardson is one of them and I became a fan of her after Edge of Seventeen and she's great here as well.
So all in all I really liked Split and if you are a fan of M. Night then you're gonna dig this movie. The ending will kinda blow you away! Even if you aren't a fan of his recent movies then I still suggest this if you like a good thriller.
