10. Green Room
Not many movies shock me with violence anymore, but my mouth was wide open with some of the stuff that happens in this movie! Most of the movie takes place at one location and that worked for the story they were telling. Anton Yelchin is great but Patrick Stewart is so good here. He plays the owner of the bar/club and his character is very subtle but effective. The realistic way things go down is my favorite aspects of this film. I won't spoil anything here but I highly recommend checking this one out! It's streaming on Amazon Prime as of this post.
So yeah, Suicide Squad is one of my favorite movies of the year! I know that people seem to HATE this movie but I really enjoyed it. It's one of the most colorful, eye pleasing movies I've seen in years! I love the way that the characters are introduced in probably the most comic book way I've ever seen with the names on screen with stats about them. It's very Metal Gear Solid and it worked for me. The extended cut adds a few scenes to it and the biggest is one with Harley chasing down the Joker and them having a lengthy one on one scene and it should've been in the original cut! Also, the scene where Joker pushes Harley into the acid and jumps after her is my favorite scene in the movie and it's so well done! Having Batman and Flash in this movie was cool and smart and they have different lines in the extended cut. I liked this movie a lot and whatever that says about me I guess it just says it haha.
8. Edge of 17
So I went into this movie expecting it to be a Juno type movie and I would like it but I didn't think it would be one of my favorite movies this past year! It's so well written and the jokes land and the acting is so on point here. Hailee Steinfeld is so good and her range is super impressive! It is a standard story of a high school girl who doesn't fit in but it ends up telling an important story about family and friends that hit with me. And rating this movie R was smart cause if it were PG-13 and limited itself I'm not sure I would've liked it as much. I honestly can't wait for this to come out on bluray so I can watch it again!
7. Central Intelligence
Honestly this is another surprise for me! I knew that The Rock and Kevin Hart had good chemistry just based on their social media posts leading up to this movie but man this movie is awesome! It was easily the hardest I laughed during a movie this year! The Rock's character is kinda of awkward when he is introduced after his high school days and I kinda thought he was just putting on an act to get Kevin Hart's character to go along but I am so glad that he was that character the entire movie! There's a scene where Kevin Harts character is describing him stealing starbursts from a store that I was almost cry laughing! You need to see this movie if you haven't! I did watch the Uncut version of this and they drop a good bit of F bombs and I know the theatrical cut was PG-13 so just know that.
6. Moana
Moana is an amazing movie! Alright...next movie haha.
But for real, I knew I'd like Moana but I was kinda blown back by how much I did. For me a movie like this doesn't work if I don't like the music and I loved the music! I've listened to the soundtrack a few times since I saw it haha. The way they build up the character of Moana is so great and emotional. The Rock sings in this movie you guys! Taking it back to his WWE days when he would play the acoustic guitar in the ring! The fantasy aspect of this movie works so for me as well. The villain is cool and has a purpose even though it's not seen much. This could be the next big Disney Princess franchise if they choose to do so! Loved this movie!
