My Top 10 Movies Of The Year (Halfway Point)

Since the year is half over I wanted to talk some about the movies I've seen this year and ya know...make a list of the ones I liked the most. I do my best to see most movies that comes out but I just can't see them all. So there might be one or two you don't see on this list at all and one might be one that you loved but I either didn't see it or just didn't connect with it like you did and that's fine! Spring Breakers was my favorite movie in 2012 so I have definitely had some high on my list that people have hated and that's fine too. We all have different tastes and that's why reading lists like this is fun right? Or it's just a complete waste of time but who knows things really! Alright, let's talk about my personal favorite movies this year, so far!

Honorable mentions: Hellboy, Child's Play(2019), Captain Marvel, Triple Frontier, Aladdin, Happy Death Day 2U, Us, Shazam!, I Am Mother, Detective Pikachu, John Wick Chapter 3 ( I see and like a lot of movies ok!)

10. Longshot

These are the kind of rom-coms that I love! Get a bunch of really funny people together to tell a very heartwarming story and I'll eat it up. The chemistry between Seth Rogan and Charlize Theron is so strong and by the end of the movie I bought in with them being a thing. Yeah there are some ridiculous moments this movie but it's so much fun and gets pretty emotional at parts. I have always connected with movies like this where the woman seems out of a guy's league but they end up together anyway. It gives me hope for my own life even it's just fall hope, it's there.

9. Midsommar

Goddamn what a movie this is! This is one of those movies that completely delivers what it promised to in the trailers and goes about 117 steps beyond that in the last 30-45 mins. Yeah this movie is 2 1/2 hours but I feel it needed to be that long to let us connect with the characters and setting. The acting, directing, and music of this movie are all masterful! The visuals in the movie will stick with me for the rest of my life and it's beautifully violent. I'm surprised that this movie only got an R rating because some of the violence goes beyond anything I've seen in a main line release! It's also surprisingly very funny!

8. Godzilla: King of the Monsters

I'm a big fan of the most recent Godzilla and King Kong movie so I was really looking forward to this and it delivered everything it promised to. I have no clue why this movie reviewed so poorly...oh wait, yeas I do, cause entertainment critics in 2019 are completely all over the place in what they give high scores to. That aside, this movie is amazing from a visual point! It's a 2 hour movie and 90 mins of that time is monsters beating the hell out of each other and it's awesome! Sets up for the next movie well too!

7. Glass

I understand that most people will have this movie on their worst movies of the year list and I just don't get that! To me, this was the prefect cross-over/coming together movie! Unbreakable is one of my all-time favorite movies and I loved Split and this is an amazing blend of the two movies. There are some genuinely emotional moments in this movie and some great action scenes. I thought the twist made sense as to why these characters existed and had an ending that made just as much sense. I legit loved the ending to this movie, it's so moving and powerful! People can hate on this movie all they want, I loved it!

6. Toy Story 4

This movie is perfect! It's everything I wanted it to be and it's everything it needed to be. It's starts with something that is so smart and we get to connect with these characters in ways we never did before. Just hearing Woody talk about Andy is heartbreaking but cheerful at the same time. I think it's the funniest movie in the series and also the most emotional. It was emotional for me at least because I've been there from the start. I've seen every movie in theaters and 1995 to 2019 is a long time! I cried twice! Forky is also the best new character of the year! He's not trash!

5. The Highwaymen

I'm a sucker for historical movies and I'm an even bigger sucker for crime movies so this naturally fit both and I loved it for that! It follows the highwaymen that were in charge of taking out Bonnie and Clyde and seeing their side of this story was so fascinating. This is Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson at their finest and they have some amazing scenes together. The movie isn't overly violent but the scenes that it is it goes for the super gritty and realistic view and shows how violent Bonnie and Clyde were instead of the celebrity side from the original movie. It's such an interesting movie and it deserves serious Oscar love!

4. Alita: Battle Angel

I connected with this movie in a way that I did not expect to. I get that it's not a very unique story or even setting but the characters are so different and full of personality. I really connected with the character of Alita and felt for her with all the shit she goes through in this movie. I found myself getting super emotional at scenes when I wouldn't feel that way in another movie. The action is also very cool and fast paced when we get it. It's actually not as action focused as I thought but it turned out to be a good thing. The visual effects in the movie better get an Oscar nomination cause they look life-like and Alita looked like a real person! The ending left it open for a sequel and I really really hope we get one!

3. Spider-Man: Far From Home

Batman is/will always be my favorite superhero but Spider-Man has always been a close second. This movie gave me the live-action Spider-Man I have been wanting my entire life. I liked him in all the other movies but this one really nailed him as a character and nailed his relationships. The stuff with him and MJ in this movie is some of the best I have ever seen and came across so genuine and it made me so happy seeing them fall for each other. Mysterio is also one of my favorite comic book villains and man they got him so right in this movie! The senes when he is messing with Peter with the illusions are some of the coolest scenes I've ever seen and really popped in 3D! It also has the best mid-credits scene in the MCU!

2. Booksmart

I was hoping this movie was going to be as good as I thought when I first saw the trailer but I didn't expect it to be one of my all time favorite comedies! It has that Mean Girls and Superbad vibe to it that is so damn hard to pull off. Stuff like that can only be pulled off with expert writing and acting! And for this to be Olivia Wilde's directorial debut, she's found her calling in my opinion. As good as an actress as she is she's an even better directer and deserves a best Director Oscar nomination for this movie! It's so fucking funny and nailed literally everything it was going for! It's also so personal with its characters. There's a scene late in the movie where Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein's characters get into an argument and it might end up being my scene of the year! It's so serious and is treated as such which was such a smart move! It's such a damn great movie!

1. Avengers: Endgame

It's Endgame! It was always going to be this movie and it ended up being this movie! To me, this is the best superhero movie ever made and it's going to take something huge to knock it off of that top spot. I could talk a lot about this movie but the "Avengers Assemble" scene is one that I never thought I would see in a movie. As a kid reading comics and watching the animated shows I never thought I would see something that grand in a comic book movie and I'm getting emotional thinking about it as I write this. It's going to go down as one of the best scenes in cinema history for me and it's possible it'll be a thought I have on my death bed. The perfect payoff and end for these characters. Thanos is also in contention for best movie villain of all time!
