Thoughts on Apex Legends

If you follow games then you know that this game has taken over the planet this past week! It's had 25 million people download it in one week and that's nuts! It was rumored that Respawn, the company that made Titanfall 1 & 2, were working on a new game. Well, last Monday they ran a stream and announced this game and released it the same day! It's not unheard of for smaller games to come out right when they are announced but AAA games rarely do that. Not only was it a surprise release but it was a Battle Royale game set in the Titanfall universe. It was a bit to unravel but I've been playing it the past week and wanted to give my thoughts on it.

I get that the phrase "I'm normally not into Battle Royale games" has been thrown around a ton since this game came out but, I'm really not. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout was the closest I got to getting into one but it lasted about 2 weeks and I bounced. This game is is so different than the others and it's honestly been the only game I can think about since I first played it.

You play in a team of three and one person is assigned to drop the whole team on the map. You can pass it over if you don't want it and that's a nice small touch. Most of the guns in the game are from Titanfall 2 and the gunplay is ridiculously good! I love the way Call of Duty feels but this might be my favorite gunplay in gaming outside of Destiny. A great thing about this game is that once you die that doesn't mean that you're done. If you fully die your team can recover your tag and take it to a revive beacon and bring you back. All of them are in open areas and you are easy to pick off, so it's a risk. Plus, once you use one of the spots it's offline for the rest of the match. The player limit is only 60 people but it honestly doesn't feel like it. I've only had a few games where I went most of the match not seeing anyone, that's kinda just part of the game type.

There are six free characters to play and two more that you can unlock. You can choose to pay for them or grind it out and unlock them with in-game currency. It will take a while to get them both but it gives another thing to go for. Each character feels very different and that's another thing that sets this game apart. It's not a full on Overwatch hero game but it comes closer than some. A character like Bangalore can use smoke grenades and has an air strike as an ultimate and someone like Wraith has a warp she can use to warp across the map. It def takes getting used to all the characters but I would suggest doing that because only one character can be on each team.

And since the game is free that means it has a ton of micro transactions but I don't mind them. They are all cosmetic and they can all be earned in game. There are a ton of skins for each character and a ton of skins for each weapon. You do get a loot box every time you level up so you get free things that way. They have said they are doing the Fortnite thing of having seasons and you can buy stuff if you choose to. I think that's smart because why not copy the biggest game of the past two years!

It's very early on with the game but I've been impressed with it. It launched very strong with little server issues and is just fun to play! They have said that they have years of content planned out and hey, maybe this will the the first BR game that grabs me. As it stands now I plan on playing a lot more of this and this will probably be my go-to multiplayer game in-between big releases coming out. And maybe this will lead to us getting Titanfall 3!
