So since we are about a quarter of the way through the year I wanted to talk a little about some of the movies I've seen. I've done some writing on some movies on here already but I wanted to go full list mode and talk about my top 7 movies of the year so far. Keep in mind that I haven't seen all the movies that have been released this year but I have seen a good bit of them. Alright, let's get to it!
Notable Mentions: Black Panther, Annihilation, Rampage, Truth or Dare
7. I Feel Pretty
I was very surprised by this movie! I've always liked Amy Schumer but I never thought she would make a movie like this! This is a comedy but it could be argued that it's just as much a drama. The meaning behind this movie is a very important one and that's of having doubt in yourself and realizing as long as you're confidence, life will reward you. The premise of this movie is kinda like Shallow Hal and that works. This movie has a ton of heart and honestly I got emotional a few times cause some of the dialogue hit me with how honest it was. I prob shouldn't have liked this movie as much as I did but here we are!
6. A Wrinkle In Time
I went into this movie not knowing much about it. I hadn't read the book and the trailers for it kept the story pretty vague. I was surprised how Kingdom Hearts this movie is! The main villain of this movie could've been in a Kingdom Hearts game and the main hero is chosen and struggles to understand why. The visuals are amazing and it has a few strong emotional scenes I wasn't ready for. It has a good message and a feel-good ending that works. Chris Pine and Deric McCabe are the standouts to me.
5. Blockers
I saw this movie a few weeks after it came out and it was getting amazing reviews for a comedy. Now, I honestly don't trust reviews as much as I used to so I wanted to see it for myself. I thought it would be funny but man this movie is so well written and acted! It's def a dirty comedy in the same vein as Superbad but it has some emotional moments that are very well done! John Cena has such great comedic timing and he's gonna keep getting major roles after this one! The movie is just as much about the kids as it is the parents and it's a perfect balance of both sides. Chad is also totally me and he's my favorite character...and his hat!
4. The Ritual
I literally got on Netflix on a random Friday night after fixing a pizza and saw this had just been added. I knew nothing about it but saw it was a horror movie and decided to give it a go. My God what an amazing surprise! It has a very Blair Witch feel to it but has a deeper story and I really connected with these characters. The opening truly shocked me because I didn't watch the trailer so I had no clue what the plot as. The creature is epic and the horror is pretty intense! I suggest watching this with the speakers up as loud as you can! If you're in the mood for a great horror movie then I highly suggest giving this a go!
3. Tomb Raider
I fell in love with the 2 recent Tomb Raider games and when I heard that this movie was going to be in the same style as those games I got excited. I liked the other Tomb Raider movies but this one turned out to be not just a great video game movie, but a great stand-alone adventure movie. I loved that this movie took it's time and had excellent character development. There's a scene between Lara and her father that made me very emotional and that's thanks to the great acting. Alicia Vikander completely owns the screen and she is Lara Croft as far as I'm concerned! I really hope we get a sequel cause I need more!
2. Avengers: Infinity War
I mean, do I need to say anything? The action is amazing, the acting is amazing (especially after learning that Tom Holland improvised a scene late in the movie), and Thanos owns the screen! It's the culmination of a 10 year build-up and it totally lives up to all the hype! Not just a great movie but a great accomplishment in film!
1. A Quiet Place
This is an all timer to me! I feel like I'm going to be talking about this movie for the next 10 years and it still be one of the most unique horror movies I've seen! I was very excited for this movie and I was glued to the screen the entire time and, as stupid as it sounds, I found myself holding my breath for sections because of how tense some scenes are! About 60% of this movie has no dialogue and is very quiet, so it depends on acting and atmosphere and it nails both! Emily Blunt is the standout to me and she deserves some awards love for her performance! John Krasinski wrote, produced, directed and was the lead in this movie! I'm amazed with that! He put his mark down as one of the bigger names in Hollywood after this and I'm looking forward to seeing more movies in this universe since a sequel has been confirmed!
