Mad Max is a game that I feel a lot of people overlooked when it came out! I know exactly why it was overlooked and if you play games then you probably know why. It literally came out the same day as Metal Gear Solid 5! The end of a series that had going on since the PS1 era! And I get that excuse has been thrown around the past 3 years but it legit came out the same day so. It would be like a movie coming out the same day as Avengers:Infinity War! So since the game is free for PlayStation Plus members this month I wanted to talk a bit about why you might wanna check it out. It's also on Xbox Game Pass as well.
The main thing I like about this game is traversal. It's an open world game and you have a car you can upgrade and that's how you get around. The driving feels good and you get a good sense of speed. It's honestly a great podcast game once you have beat the main story cause you can do all the side stuff if you want to go for trophies/achievements. You knock over scarecrows that are basically made of bodies and steel, clear out camps to get scrap, scout each area out in hot air balloons, clear mine fields, and races. Some of the side stuff fills like filler but its chill and generally simple to do.
I touched on the car combat and I want to go more into that. You can ram into other cars, shoot gas tanks with a shotgun, and use a harpoon to rip a car apart of pull drivers out of their car! It takes a minute to get used to the controls but once you do, it feels so good! And the explosions look amazing in this game! There's something so satisfying about seeing a car explode and see parts flying everywhere! You have a companion, Chumbucket, and he can fix your car up after you get in fights cause you car can get pretty messed up pretty fast by some of the late game cars!
The combat outside of a car is solid but not as good as the car combat. It's basically the Batman Arkham style combat but not quite the same. Max feels heavier than Batman and that makes sense since Batman is more nimble, but just know that it's not as smooth and that's on purpose. I do like picking up weapons and killing enemies with shivs.
The story of this game is super simple just like all the Mad Max movies. You get your car stolen and confront the main villain Scabrous Scrotus and put a chainsaw though his head but he lives. This is all in the opening cutscene and it's pretty cool! Scrotus is the brother of Immortan Joe who was the villain of Mad Max:Fury Road so it's pretty cool that it connects to that movie. So after that you meet Chumbucket and he offeres to rebuild a car called the Magnum Opus. So you go from area to area defeating leaders and clearing them out and rebuilding your car. Scrotus is a really cool villain but it's one of those games that only has him in it at the beginning and the end game. He does looks intimidating AF though!
The game is gorgeous! It's not in 4K HDR or anything but it looks really good regardless! It does take place fully in a post-apocalipse dead world but they manage to fill it with colors regardless. Each area has a a color tied to it and you can unlock those to customize your car and Max once you deafen the leaders of those ares. There aren't really frame rate problems or screen tearing which is impressive since some late game areas get pretty busy.
If you are in the mood for an open world game until God of War or State of Decay 2 comes out or was interested in it when it came out but just never got around to it then I highly recommend checking it out. If you have PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass then it's not gonna cost you anything right now. It's not a game that's gonna blow you away or anything but if you're like me and like the Mad Max movies then you'll dig it!
