Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
I wanted so badly for this game to be good! I remember seeing it at E3 last year and realizing that Resident Evil was taking an Outlast direction and going first person and being skeptical. I thought RE 6 was fine but really wanted this series to get back to horror! I played this game twice all the way though and it crossed my mind to go for the platinum trophy. The atmosphere, the lighting, the character models, the acting, the music, all of it just works so well. This game made me jump in several spots and I normally don't do that.! The story is solid and ties into the RE universe nicely. I haven't played any of the DLC yet but I'll get around to it. I think I'll honestly play this game once a year for the next several years, it's that good! Gives me so much hope going forward with this series.
Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
I'm only putting this on here because of 0.2: Birth by Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage. This 3 hour section of the collection tells what happened to Aqua after Birth by Sleep and bridges gaps leading into Kingdom Hearts 3. It's running in the same engine that KH3 will be and it looks amazing! I love Aqua as a character and was genuinely surprised where the story went. The combat feels great but there isn't much to do since it's over so fast. The rest of the collection includes Dream Drop Distance and a movie. It's def worth getting if you're a KH fan and haven't yet. PSN puts it on sale often as well.
Horizon Zero Dawn
I know that the whole "a star is born" thing is cliche but PlayStation really did find their next major game star with Aloy. She's such an interesting character and by the time I reached the end I wanted more! The ending is so prefect and I genuinely cried at the final shot. The open world is well fleshed out and the machine enemies are interesting to fight. And this game looks unbelievably gorgeous! I played on a PS4 Pro on a 4K TV and it really needs to be played in 4K with HDR to be fully appreciated! I literally waited until I got a 4K TV to play this. This is a great start to what might just be the next huge franchise in the years to come. The Frozen Wilds DLC is coming later this year and I'm looking forward to that!
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
This is one of the best games I've ever played! For a long time I considered Ocarina of Time as my favorite Zelda game but this game has replaced that! For this to be the first time a Zelda game has been truly open world, they nailed it better than any other game outside of maybe GTA 5 for me. The story is simple but kind of amazing. The cutscenes are sparse but they are all meaningful and dripping with emotion. The voice acting is great, another first for the series, and this just feels like a new direction for the series that I hope they stick with! The first DLC pack just came out and I'm looking forward to trying out Master Mode!
Ghost Recon: Wildlands
I'm a sucker for open world third-person shooters and stories about drug lords so this gave me everything I wanted! The gunplay is tight, it looks gorgeous, a lot of different guns, and a ton of things to do. I really liked the concept of killing/capturing leaders of different areas and trying to get to El Sueno. He ends up being an awesome villain that makes sense and you get to see him though the entire game, which is how I prefer main villains to be. The driving in the game isn't great and the Narco Road DLC was a little meh but it's so fun that those things are forgivable. I really hope they make a franchise of Wildlands cause I got the platinum trophy in this game and I still want to play more.
Persona 5
I don't imagine that I'll play a game with a better story than Persona 5 the rest of this year or even into next! It's straight forward and pretty linear but the characters are so rich and made me believe that they were actual people. This game looks incredible and the art direction is some of the best I've ever seen! Even the menus are stylish as hell! The combat is fast and fun and the persona fusing system is fun to mess around with. The side activities are cool and building up the relationships with your friends is amazingly well done! I actually felt bad turning down people to hangout cause I wanted to infiltrate palaces. I still think that Persona 3 is my favorite in the series but this is an amazing entry and deserves to be played. It took me around 100 hours to beat so it's loaded with content!
