Thoughts on Mass Effect: Andromeda

So Mass Effect Andromeda. I was so excited for this game, cause Mass Effect 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, but when I saw the facial animations a few days before the game came out I was worried. The I started seeing reviews come out and I got even more worried even though I don't go by reviews like I used to cause I'm a big believer in finding out for myself. I do want to say that I played this on a PS4 Pro before I get into talking about the details.

The big thing about this game is the technical problems. I want to start with this because I've never played a AAA game like this with as many tech issues that this has. Environments not loading, Ryder's head going all Exorcist during conversations, really bad textures when seen up close, horrible facial animations on the human characters, quests being bugged to the point that you have to restart the game, game freezes and that's just what I experienced. I love BioWare and the Mass Effect games but this game feels like it needed another 6 months or so to be ready for people to play. I know the first game had some issues but those were mainly frame rate problems not having entire sections on a world not load in! I'm not going to go as far as to say it's offensive, but it's just a shame and it's so disappointing. BioWare released a statement saying that a patch is coming and that's good cause I personally had sections of this game that almost made me stop playing.

Now, there are awesome things about this game. The combat is the best it's ever been! It's so fast paced and pulling off some of the combo moves not only look amazing but feels amazing. It is disappointing that you can't pause and plan combat out anymore but I never used that much anyway but I know people did. The crafting system is cool as well and let's you make any kind of weapon you want you're given a ton of materials as you play so you can play around until you find a gun you like. The Nomad, the Makko from the first game, is also really fun the drive around and once you upgrade it that thing can really go!

The graphics look amazing as a whole. Some of the environments on some of the planets look real and I took a few screen shots on PS4. The alien character models look great and the ships and vehicles all look great! The biotic attacks warp the screen in a cool way and there's no slow down even with all the bullets and crazy powers going off all over the place!

Now on to the story. This is the weakest story in the Mass Effect series and that's the most disappointing thing about this game in my opinion. The villain is lame and the end has no payoff. The final mission is very cool though. There are only two new species in the entire game even though you're in a new galaxy. To their credit, one of the new species is the main focus of the game and you learn about them a lot and they're interesting. I won't go into spoilers because I do think this game is worth playing. Your crew is kind of a mix of really interesting to outright bad/boring. They all have interesting loyalty missions. Ryder is actually a more interesting character then Shepard to me. Cause Shepard had a decorated past going into the first game and Ryder is a blank slate and if formed by your decisions. The voice acting is strong throughout and there's a lot of it! This is prob the most chatty Mass Effect game cause even the normal NPCs have different things to say as you walk by them.

I want to take a second and praise the soundtrack because it's legit amazing just like all the other games in the series.

I don't think this is a bad game, I actually put around 50 hours into it and had a lot of fun with it. It's just not polished like I was expecting it to be. Exploring the four open world planets is addicting.  Finding materials and doing side quests are actually interesting. Just don't go into this game wanting a well told main story cause you'll be let down. Go in wanting an open world to explore with amazing combat and you'll have a good time. If you played Dragon Age Inquisition then you'll have an idea of how this game looks and plays. You can tell they used the engine from that game and made this game with it, problems and all. I went into this game with very high expectations and I beat it thinking it was a good game, so I think it's a good start to a new trilogy if BioWare wants to take it that way.
