It's been almost 10 years since Persona 4 came out on Playstation 2 and Persona 4 Golden came out in 2013 for the Vita. So it's been a while since we've had a new numbered Persona game! I'm about 17 hours into Persona 5 now and trust me that's early for this game! It took me around 80 hours to play though 3 and 4 and it's been said that this game will take around 100 hours to just get through the story.
So if you've never played a Persona game let me break down what this games. It takes place in Tokyo and is part turned based JRPG, part dating sim and part Pokemon. Saying there's a lot to this game is a tad bit of an understatement! You make friends and build up relationships as a high school student at Shujin Academy during the day or might choose to try and take a burger challenge to increase your courage. Once you get to a certain point you can explore Shibuya and go to all the shops. Personas are basically spirits that express the personality of you and your friends that you can used to attack. You can acquire new Personas in dungeons and fuse some together to make new more powerful Personas. From looking at the index it looks like there are well over 100 Personas to get/fuse in the game.
The game actually starts different than any of the other Persona games. I don't want to ruin the way it starts if you're like me and went into this game pretty dark but it was a smart move to me. Gives you some action instead of the normal slow story heavy start that the others have. And with that start comes a different way of telling the story but I'll also keep that one for the full piece I write when I've gotten through game at least once. Just know it's different and a needed change for vets of the series and a great way to pull in new players.
This might be the most stylish game I've ever played! The way the menu flows is even cool! The red and black theme of the game seeps it's way into post fight screens and attacks. The persona designs are some of the coolest in the series even though I've only seen a few of them. The game has anime cutscenes for important stories bits and they're all well animated. The voice acting is fantastic and the characters are deep just like in P3 and P4. I think I like Morgana is pretty much filling in the Teddy(P4) role so far but I like Morgana better so far.
Persona 3 is one of my favorite JRPGs ever made and this game is on par with that so far. If you want an awesome/super long JRPG then do yourself a solid and pick this game up at some point. You'll def have to make room for it though during this packed 2017 but it's well worth your time! Man a ton of awesome games have come out this year and it's only April!
