Thoughts on Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands Beta

I spent a good part of this past weekend playing the Ghost Recon: Wildlands closed beta. I was very interesting in checking this out since I liked the Division and the last Ghost Recon game a good bit. I'm kind of a sucker for open world third person shooters like this so keep that in mind haha. I overall did like it but I also had a few problems with it. The good outweighs the mediocre in my opinion though.

So the game takes place in Bolivia and you play one of the four members of an elite military group known as ghosts. You mainly focus on taking out two people in the cartel during this beta and it takes about six missions to get to them and take them out. The missions are cool and you get to drive cars, bikes and choppers by the time you're done with the story missions. They vary from rescuing hostages and interrogating high ranking officials. Doing sides missions has a purpose outside of just experience cause you unlock weapon parts by completing them. The side missions are kind of hit or miss to me though. They're kind on basic point to point missions or taking over outposts. Some of the outposts though have documents that put skill points and weapons on the map so it's definitely worth it to do the side stuff.

The gunplay isn't as tight as in the Division but it feels fine. It's interesting that the default is set to when you aim down sights it swaps to first person. It took a while to get used to but I ended up keeping it that way cause it does have the snap to target system like in a Call of Duty game. My favorite thing about this beta is the customization though. You can customize your character in a ton of different ways and every part of every gun is fully customizable. It has a cool animation of the gun being broken apart when you click to customize and it goes back together when you're done.

The characters and voice acting were a little rough here. The beta starts off with a lengthy cutscene in a chopper, kind like how the Division best started, and the voice acting is kinda meh. And really the voice acting remains pretty meh throughout all the story missions and the banter with the other ghosts while in a vehicle. I did play on a PS4 Pro and the game is Pro enhanced and it ran very smooth for me and it looked great with hardly any pop in. It does the GTA V thing of having a long load time at the start but none after that. The beta area was 1 of 21 areas that the full game will have and it was huge! So there's going to be a lot to do in this game, I just hope it's not a bunch of repeated content and the areas vary.

I honestly think the thing that is going to hurt this game is it's release date. Horizon Zero Dawn comes out February 28th, the Nintendo Switch and Zelda: Breath of the Wild comes out March 3rd, Ghost Recon: Wildlands comes out March 7th and Mass Effect: Andromeda comes out March 21st. As much as I liked playing this game I'm not sure this will be a day one purchase for me strictly  because of release date.  Cause I had a ton of fun and would normally go ahead and preorder this so I could have it ready to go day one on my PS4. I wish that this game came out in February and it would probably sell better. But I know For Honor comes out in February and I guess Ubi Soft doesn't want two games from them competing at the same time.

I did like this beta and had fun with it and I will play this game at some point! If you like games like the previous Ghost Recon games and open world games then you will more than likely like this. The main villain looks really cool and I hope that the story is better than it was here cause there's a lot of potential with it.
