Thoughts on the Nintendo Switch

So last week Nintendo had a stream fully revealing their new console the Switch. We already knew about the console but finally got to see details about the hardware and games running on it. To brush over the specs real quick: it's gonna cost $299.99 and the release date is March 3rd. It comes in the standard black(pictured above) and a black with the controllers in neon red and blue. The Joy-con controllers can come off the base controller and hook onto the console and can be used as a handheld. The screen looks nice and they said the battery life can last 2-6 hours depending on what game you're  playing. The SD card that comes with the system is 32 gb and I've heard that if you want to download the new Zelda game it will take up about 40% of that. So if you plan on downloading your games you'll wanna get a bigger SD card, they aren't that expensive. The games will be on cartridges like the 3DS which is very interesting! I actually think that's a smart move cause they are more reliable than discs and can be kept in cases easily for people that are on the go or traveling a lot.

Now on to the games that will be available at launch. Well...that's the bad part here haha. Outside of The Legend of Zelda; Breath of the Wild there really isn't much available. Here's a list of the confirmed games at launch:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • 1, 2, Switch
  • Just Dance 2017
  • Super Bomberman R
  • The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth +
  • Skylanders Imaginators
So that's about it as far as games. One AAA game with Zelda and not much for a mass audience. I'm really hoping that the E Shop is available from day one so we people can buy older Mario and Zelda games until Mario Kart 8 Deluxe comes out in March and Splatoon 2 this Summer. I'm crossing my fingers that the rumored Gamecube games will be on the E Shop so I can play Mario Sunshine!

My overall thoughts about the Switch is a mixed bag honestly. I preordered one because I'm a huge Zelda fan. If Zelda wasn't coming out I would probably wait until the summer to get one. I'm super intrigued with how easy it will be to pull the screen out and play on the go. Cause with the Wii U the games took a big hit with graphics and frame rate when playing on the Wii U gamepad. I love the 3DS and would honestly rather bring that with me when on the go or traveling. The 3DS also has a huge library of great games that the Wii and Wii U never had. I just hope the Switch doesn't fall into that with the lack of third party support. Cause I know Rockstar has said that Red Dead 2 isn't gonna be on there and Gearbox said Borderlands 3 more than likely won't be on there. And at the time of this post Netflix will not be available at launch.

I think that the price is fair and I'm ok buying this console just to play Zelda and have it look as good as it can. I just hope that the games will come and this system doesn't fail like the Wii U did!
