Re-Enter Survival Horror: Thoughts on Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Before you read: I won't go into spoilers with this. Just wanted to say that here cause I went into this game seeing as little as I could and I'm really glad I did.

I was just like everyone else when that trailer at E3 last year was revealed to be Resident Evil 7! I've played all the previous games but the Resident Evil remake on Gamecube is my favorite. It took what was great about the first and made it even better. So I was hoping that this game would get back to horror. Cause Dead Space filled that void for a while for me until Dead Space 3 turned into a straight up action game. Well RE 7 gets back to true survival horror and it's amazing!

The setup here is that you play as Ethan Winters and his wife, Mia,  has been missing for three years. He hears from her and she wants him to come get her in Dulvey, Louisiana. Once he gets there Mia definitely isn't well and he has to deal with the Baker family. The story was actually really interesting which was surprising cause RE 6 was so all over the place with the story. The story is simple and I think that's why it works. The Baker family is what sets this game apart in my opinion. At the start it seems like there's a serious Texas Chainsaw Massacre thing going on but then it gets very Resident Evil with puzzle solving and even a familiar way of getting the shotgun.  You see the Baker family from start to finish and they command the screen almost every time. When they agro they are fast and loud and you can fight them and they'll eventually back off but I found it best to just run when you can cause ammo can be scarce.

I like the change of pace with this being the first game in the mainline series to be first person. It puts the monsters right in your face and there are some truly disturbing scenes that wouldn't have worked in third person. I know that a reason for this being in first person was because the entire game can be played in VR on Playstation. I'm not sure how I would feel if the series continued in first person but it works very well here! It's also legit scary at certain points. It's not full of jump scares or anything but the atmosphere is very detailed and the sound design is great and that leads to moments when nothing is on the screen and you feel uneasy. It's so hard to pull that stuff off with me cause I don't scare easy.

The gameplay takes it back to the pacing of the original games with combat being optional during most sections outside of boss fights and puzzles being just as important as the combat. The inventory space is also super limited and you have to pick and chose what you pick up or what to take out of save rooms. I ended up having to delete a few things not knowing where the next save room would be. Cause you can't just drop items, you have to delete them and they're gone for good once you do.  It took me around 13 hours to beat it the first time and around 6 hours the second time. There's a trophy on PS4 for beating it in under 4 hours so it's a good length for a game like this. I played on a PS4 Pro and it ran super smooth. It is PS4 Pro compatible so I'm not sure how it runs on a normal PS4 but I'd imagine it plays just fine.

I absolutely loved this game and I may go for the platinum! It delivers such an amazing atmosphere with interesting characters while also remaining one of the creepiest games I've ever played. It will be one of my favorite games of 2017. If you like Resident Evil games then you'll love this and even if you've never played a RE game this is a good entry point.
