Prometheus Review
The plot is about two archeologists finding a group of carvings from around the world with a connection to a set of stars galaxies away. They believe that they connect to the meaning of life and who created us. They set out with the help of a group to a planet they believe holds the answers they are looking for. I just want to say, that this is not an Alien movie. It does setup the events that happen in the first Alien film, but this has an entirely different story. Having said that, it sets them up very well. I'm going to stay spoiler free in this review, so I won't go into too much detail. When the group gets to the planet they find these things they call engineers, aka the thing sitting in the chair in Alien. They find their bodies throughout and are trying to figure out what might have killed them. The thing I liked most about this film is the lack of knowing fully what is going on, and that's what made Alien such a great film. It leaves you with a lot of questions, but that's good to me. Alien did the same thing.
The acting in the film is great, and I expected nothing less coming from Scott. Michael Fassbender completely steals the film as David. He is basically Bishop for a new generation without going into too much. Charlize Theron is very good as usual. She plays the pissed off head of the operation, and I fully believe she could play any role in any movie perfect. Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, and Guy Pearce round out the rest of the main cast and they all do well on their own right.
The one thing that people will be talking about in this film will the the visuals. This movie looks amazing. I did see the 3D IMAX version and I suggest that be the version everyone sees, it's worth the extra money. The scenes at the end of the movie alone will almost make your jaw drop they look so good, and also the very start as well. It really made me think what Alien would have looked like if it were made now. No, that is not me wanting a remake, I would personally kill the person who would do it. The movie is quite violent as well. Some scenes will even make hardcore horror fans cringe a bit. None of it feels forced though. It's all necessary scenes to further the plot.
This film delivered exactly what I wanted, and that's not an easy thing to do. If you go in wanting an Alien movie you may be disappointed, because it's not really. As a fan of the Alien films since a kid I was fine with that once I saw what was going on. It's a complicated film to talk about without giving anything away. Just trust me when I say Ridley Scott did it and he is fully back into the Sci-fi realm. I have hear that he wants to make a sequel to this and possibly a third, so the questions will be answered.
In my personal opinion this not only beats The Avengers as the best film of the summer so far, but it's the best film of the year so far.
5/5
