Resident Evil Tips (Leading into Resident Evil: Village)

Since Resident Evil Village is coming out soon I thought I'd get back to writing more with a tips post. Now I'm not a top tier Resident Evil player or anything but I've played the hell out of the modern games and feel I can maybe help some people out that are just getting into the series with this game. Cause it seems every time a big franchise comes out with a new game that game ends up being someones first game in the series. I love the RE games but they can be pretty intimidating to get into. Now you can just straight up play on the easiest difficulty and not a have any problems at all but I'd recommend playing on at least normal at first to see what the game has to throw at you cause these games are meant to be tense experiences. I'd argue these games are meant to be played on the hardest difficulty but that's just me.

So here's what I want to talk about in this post. I want to just give some basic tips and suggestions on how to approach a Resident Evil game for first timers. I don't want to get crazy and go into speed run strategies or anything like that, just straight up how to get the handle of a new Resident Evil game. I don't want to make it sound like I'm treating this game series like Dark Souls or something with how confusing things can be. For the most part the games are pretty straight forward but they don't seem like it at first. I just thought this may help those coming to these games for the first time with Village and might be entertaining to those who are veterans.

Side note: I'm not going into any story stuff about any of the games in this post. It's the 8th main entry in the series so expect to be confused about some characters/lore if Village is going to be your first RE game. But I also think you'll be fine either way cause they usually do a good job of telling isolated stories each game.

TAKE YOUR TIME

This probably sound like a no-brainer since these games are survival horror but some people love to run at full speed in games. I'm guessing Village will have a sprint button like all the other games but I would take my time through areas your first time. Explore all the paths and take in the surroundings. You want to make sure you get as much ammo and healing items as you can. Things typically hit hard and are tough to kill in RE games so you'll need as much of that stuff as you can find. Also enemies can come out of nowhere and may be hard to hit so you'll want some F-it ammo for those kind of situations.

A big part of theses games is the atmosphere they build and they usually give you time to take it in, so take advantage of that. You may be running your ass off the next time you come into that area so I'd learn as well as you can, especially if it's an open area with multiple paths.

USE WHAT THE GAME GIVES YOU

Say you come into a save room and you see some grenade launcher ammo in there, chances are that means you better equip your launcher for the next area. Don't be afraid to use that ammo you are given in those types of situations. These games are really good about giving you enough ammo for the enemies you are about to deal with. It's never unfair even though it can seem like it is at times. Having said that, you may want to save that special ammo for the bigger enemies. I wouldn't use launcher ammo for normal enemies but hey, you do you.

A thing to keep in mind is that every RE game can be beaten with only a knife. The creators of the games said this years ago and they have yet to make one where that isn't the case. There are situations that using guns is a requirement but they always give you a gun/ammo for those specific times.

SAVE OFTEN

This hasn't been as big of a problem in the modern games since they all have auto saves, but I'd still save as often as you can. Auto saves are awesome for boss fights but saving on your own gives you the chance to have your load out the way you want it. Cause Resident Evil is all about inventory management and you want to make sure you have the right stuff when you need it. So since you are going to be switching your stuff out all the time you need to save when you have your load out good to make things easier on yourself in case you run into a tough section. Plus, all save rooms are safe from enemies and usually have healing items/ammo in them.

RUN

During the course of an RE game you're gonna run into sections with a ton of enemies and you absolutely don't need to fight them all. When I say that I don't mean cower away but more of a strategic moving out of the way. Like if you need to go down a hallway and it has 4-5 enemies you have to go by to pass it, find a way to deal with them without a full on fight. You can shoot them in the legs and move past them or pop off a few shotgun rounds to do nothing but knock them back so you can pass. Ammo isn't always all about killing in these games.

There's also going to be sections that you can just straight up run past enemies. I'm not sure if Village is going to be different but the past few games didn't have enemies drop anything so there's nothing to gain by killing a room of enemies. You're playing a survival horror game so find a way to survive that isn't always popping heads.

It also kind of seems like this game is going to have a character that is going to chase you around and you won't be able to kill her. When you are in that section of the game haul ass when you see or hear her cause she'll F you up! Or let her catch you and get her to step on your face...your call there!

HANDGUN AMMO IS EXPENDABLE

Let's stick with guns and ammo for a quick minute here and let's talk handgun ammo. Handgun ammo is going to be the most common ammo you find and you'll likely find it from start to finish so you'll get a lot of it. Don't hesitate to shoot crates, hidden items out of reach, collectables, or anything really. You can really use that kind of ammo like some more is right around the corner cause it more than likely is. It's the weakest and you can't really use it much on bosses so use it to shoot legs and pop head of normal enemies.

Now I'm not saying to just run around pulling the trigger like a Call of Duty game but use that handgun ammo for things outside of combat all the time. Cause if you are using ammo outside of combat it's usually weak and only requires 1 shot to get what you need.

LOOK STUFF UP

Let's change gears here and talk about the other half of a Resident Evil game and that's the puzzles. Every game, outside of Resident Evil 3 Remake, has puzzles to deal with and sometimes they can be tricky. I'd highly recommend to try and figure them out on your first play though cause they are usually never too hard but sometimes they are. There's no shame in looking up a hint or two to help you out if you're stuck. Cause trust me, I know how damn frustrating it can be being stuck on something like that for 30 plus minutes!

I also want to throw in that you may want to look up secret locations of items and weapons. Again, I'd recommend not doing this on your first play though but you do you. You may only want to play this game once and get collectables on your first go around. RE games have a ton of secrets in them so I can guarantee you Village isn't gonna change that.

PLAY THE GAME MULTIPLE TIMES

Resident Evil games are normally around the 8-10 hour range and they are like that for a reason. These games are meant to be played multiple times to see and experience everything. Yeah, you're more than likely gonna get most of the story stuff on a single play though but that's about it. Beating the pervious games unlocked difficulties, defense items, weapons, and costumes. I'd imagine Village is going to follow that mold.

These games always gives you multiple reasons to play them 4-5 times if you want to. Especially if you are into achievements/trophies. All the RE games have infinite ammo guns to unlock and those are so damn fun! They also have challenge runs like not saving or not using the item box in a play though. Those seem impossible at first but the more you learn the game the easier those will become. But it's ultimately up to you if you want to play the game more than once.

So these have been my tips to hopefully help you get into the RE games. Like I said, I'm no expert but I've played these games a lot and want to help people get into them cause they are amazing games! I'm really looking forward to Resident Evil Village cause it looks like a game of the year contender for me! Thanks for reading this, I really appreciate it. I have't written anything in a while cause I've been in a bit of a funk but hopefully this will inspire me to write some more! Hope you all have a good one and happy gaming!
